KUCHING, Sept 3: Sarawak is set to further strengthen its role in the development of the ASEAN Grid through strategic discussions with the Asian Development Bank (ADB) in Manila next week.
Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said he would lead a delegation to the ADB to discuss the development of the ASEAN Grid, as well as economic and development opportunities in Sarawak and Malaysia, particularly in the southern ASEAN region.
“They came to see me, and I promised that I would go to Manila with a delegation so that we can look at strategic issues related to our aspiration to develop the ASEAN Grid, as well as existing development in Sarawak and Malaysia, especially in the southern ASEAN region,” he said as reported by Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas).
Abang Johari highlighted this when speaking at the dinner and opening ceremony of the 27th Annual General Meeting of the Malaysian Malay Contractors Association (PKMM) Sarawak at a leading hotel here on Wednesday (Sept 2).
He said Sarawak is playing the role envisaged by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim in advancing the ASEAN Grid, particularly through the supply of energy to countries in the southern ASEAN region.
He added that the visit would also focus on identifying opportunities for coordinated economic development across the region.
Meanwhile, Abang Johari said he welcomed in principle the proposal to establish the Borneo Business Community (BBC), comprising Kalimantan, Sarawak, Sabah and Brunei Darussalam.
He said the proposed community could consolidate the strengths and resources of the four Borneo territories, creating greater opportunities to expand economic development and strengthen regional cooperation. — DayakDaily
