MET Malaysia: Monsoon season expected to last from Nov 11 to March 2024

KUCHING, Nov 7: The monsoon season is expected to start on Nov 11 until March 2024, and within this period, four to six episodes of heavy rain are expected to happen.

In a press statement, the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MET Malaysia) said during the early phase of the monsoon season from November 2023 until January 2024, heavy rain is expected in the following states:

  • Kelantan
  • Terengganu
  • Pahang
  • Johor
  • Sarawak (west)

Meanwhile, the final phase of the monsoon season from February to March 2024 is expected to see less rainfall in the following states:


  • Perlis
  • Kedah
  • Penang
  • Perak
  • Kelantan
  • Terengganu
  • Sabah
  • Labuan
  • Sarawak (north)

“The hot and dry weather is expected to start in March 2024 and potentially create heat waves. It is known as ‘El Nino’ and is expected to last until mid-2024 with the positive Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) expected until the first quarter of 2024,” said the department.

The department also advised the public to prepare for the monsoon season and always to be attentive to the information, advice, and weather forecasts and warnings issued by the department through official channels such as its website (www.met.gov.my), the myCuaca app, and social media accounts.
