KUCHING, Sept 9: A seven-member Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) Sarawak’s Search and Rescue (SAR) team today conducted an initial assessment of the helicopter crash site at Long Lellang in Marudi while awaiting the arrival of the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) Forensics team to conduct an investigation.
The Bomba team, from fire stations in Zone 6 and led by PgKB II Rafie, arrived at the Long Lellang STOLport at about noon and subsequently reported to the Control Post headed by Sarawak Police Commissioner Datuk Mohamad Zainal Abdullah.
Bomba Sarawak said the team carried out a size-up and overhaul as part of its initial response at the crash site.
The PDRM Forensics team is expected to arrive aboard an AW139 aircraft at about 1.50pm today to conduct a detailed investigation at the scene.
Bomba Sarawak said its air crew would remain stationed at Long Lellang until the forensic team completes its investigation.
The follow-up operation also involves the evacuation of the victims’ remains from the crash site.
The BO-105 helicopter, which was carrying four Ministry of Health (MOH) personnel and a pilot, crashed yesterday (Sept 8) while conducting a Flying Doctor Service flight.
The helicopter was carrying out the medical service operation in the remote interior of Sarawak when the crash occurred.
Authorities are continuing recovery efforts and investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident. — DayakDaily
