MIRI, Oct 3: A local man was apprehended by authorities yesterday in Miri, leading to the discovery of a large quantity of suspected untaxed liquor under the Customs Act 1967.
The arrest took place during a counter-terrorism operation conducted by the Marine Police Force Intelligence Unit Region 5, Miri, at approximately 11.05am.
The suspect was detained on the roadside in Miri City, where police found 50 boxes of beer believed to be smuggled without paying customs duties.
According to Miri District Police Chief ACP Alexson Naga Chabu, the confiscated liquor is valued at an estimated RM101,549.50.
In addition to the alcohol, authorities also seized a pick-up truck used to transport the contraband.
The investigation is being carried out under Section 135(1)(d) of the Customs Act 1967, which pertains to the illegal possession and smuggling of dutiable goods.
An investigation paper has been opened, and the police are preparing a remand application to be submitted before the Magistrate’s Court to further assist in the investigation.
Alexson urged the public to report any information related to criminal activities to the police, and encouraged them to come forward or visit the nearest police station.
