MIRI, April 19: Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan revealed that there is a comprehensive masterplan for Lawas’ development as several international companies have already shown interest in investing there.
Speaking at the ‘Anak Jati Lawas’ Hari Raya gathering in Miri last night, Awang Tengah emphasised, “We must be ready—especially in terms of infrastructure.”
With that, Awang Tengah, who is also the Second Minister for Natural Resources and Urban Development, outlined several strategic projects aimed at improving connectivity, public utilities, and economic potential in the northern region, particularly in Miri, Limbang, and Lawas.
Among the flagship initiative is the RM6 billion upgrade of the coastal highway from Miri through the Asean Bridge to Brunei, which will be expanded into a dual carriageway. Fully funded by the Sarawak government, the project will connect Miri to Brunei, Limbang, Lawas, and eventually to Sabah, and will be rolled out in five phases.
“The government has agreed to enhance this route, and it will be implemented under the Northern Coastal Highway project, passing through Brunei. Construction is expected to commence by June this year,” he said.
Complementing this effort is the Sarawak Link Road, which connects Lawas, Limbang, Marudi, and Miri via interior routes that also traverse Brunei. While partially funded by the Federal government, the first phase—linking Lawas to Long Lopeng—is already underway.
On the utilities front, Awang Tengah revealed that Limbang and Lawas will be connected to the State electricity grid, with completion targeted by mid-2025. Plans also include improvements to telecommunications and water supply systems, especially in rural areas.
“In Lawas, several water projects have been approved by the State Cabinet. Currently, we rely on the Tusan water treatment plant, but we plan to construct a new water facility in Lawas under the Trusan Regional Water Supply project,” he said.
He also noted the near completion of a new hospital in Lawas and highlighted ongoing upgrades in education and healthcare infrastructure.
Looking ahead, Awang Tengah highlighted the importance of integrating the northern region with strong physical and digital connectivity.
“With these projects, we ensure that the north is well-connected and integrated,” he said.
He also stressed the region’s agricultural and economic potential, noting the vast opportunities in Limbang and Lawas, which are blessed with both highlands and coastal areas.
“With better road and sea links, and improved infrastructure, we can boost efforts to develop human capital and eliminate poverty through education and entrepreneurship,” he said. – DayakDaily
