KUCHING, May 26: Jalan Miri-Bypass, Jalan Kuala Baram Bypass, Jalan Persisiran Pantai, Jalan Pan Borneo, and Jalan Miri Airport are the five key locations identified as accident hotspots in Miri.
According to Sarawak Transport Minister Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin, these routes frequently record accidents and require more caution from road users.
“I was informed that the Pan Borneo Highway is among the locations identified as having frequent accidents, particularly due to speeding.
“Therefore, all road users are advised to always comply with traffic regulations on these roads,” he said during a Road Safety Campaign held in conjunction with the 2026 Miri Division-level Gawai Dayak on Monday (May 25), as reported by TVS.
During the event, he noted that road accidents in Miri had increased during the period from January to April of this year, with a total of 1,165 cases recorded, compared to 1,120 cases in the corresponding period last year.
He also said that fatal accidents have shown an upward trend, rising to 19 cases from 14 cases the previous year, while the number of deaths increased from 15 to 20.
“Based on statistics received from the Miri District Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division, a total of 1,165 road accidents were recorded from January to April 2026, compared to 1,120 cases during the same period last year.
“This represents an increase of 45 cases, including accidents involving property damage, which rose from 1,091 to 1,134 cases. Meanwhile, minor accidents decreased to 10 cases from 13 cases, while serious accidents remained unchanged at two cases.
“However, the most concerning development is the increase in fatal accidents, from 14 cases to 19 cases, while the number of fatalities rose from 15 to 20 people, representing an increase of more than 30 per cent,” he said.
At the same time, he advised road users not to drive under the influence of alcohol and to plan their journeys, especially during the festive season.
“We want all road users to reach their destinations safely. Even if it means arriving a little later, safety must always be the priority,” he said. — DayakDaily
