BINTANGOR, Aug 31: A man was killed while another was seriously injured after the motorcycle they were travelling on crashed into the rear of a four-wheel-drive (4WD) vehicle along Jalan KJD (Pan Borneo) here on Sunday (Aug 30).
The 65-year-old victim from Rumah Kinchu, Batu 8 Ulu Mador, was pronounced dead at the scene following the accident, which occurred at about 11.40pm.
Meradong district police chief Deputy Superintendent Tansli Mering said preliminary investigations found that the motorcycle, carrying both victims, was travelling from Sibu towards Bintangor before it allegedly crashed into the right rear section of a four-wheel-drive vehicle that was parked on the left shoulder of the road.
“The other victim, a 30-year-old man believed to have been riding the motorcycle, survived but sustained serious injuries to his legs and hands.
“The driver of the four-wheel-drive vehicle was uninjured,” he said in a statement today.
He said the impact caused the motorcycle to lose control and veer onto the left shoulder of the road, while the rider and pillion passenger were thrown onto the left lane heading towards Bintangor.
The motorcycle rider was subsequently taken to Sarikei Hospital for blood samples to be taken for alcohol and drug testing, while the deceased was also sent to the same hospital for a post-mortem examination.
Both vehicles involved have been detained at the Meradong District Police Headquarters for inspection by the Computerised Vehicle Inspection Centre (PUSPAKOM).
Police are also seeking independent witnesses and dashcam or other camera footage to assist the investigation.
Police are investigating the case under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
Members of the public with information or recordings related to the incident are urged to contact the investigating officer, Inspector Mohd Zainal Abdul Ghafar, at 011-11945095 or the Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division at the Meradong District Police Headquarters. — DayakDaily
