KUCHING, March 12: Sarawak is facing climate change after recording a 19 per cent increase in rainfall this year when it should be at the beginning of the dry season now.

Deputy Premier of Sarawak Dato Sri Dr Sim Kui Hian was referring to the flooding situation in several parts of Sarawak this week caused by extreme weather conditions.

“Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID) Sarawak will modify and adopt some of the climate change strategies from Amsterdam and Copenhagen by having local experts look into it.

“(The study and implementation will) start with MJC-Pines Square,” he said in a Facebook post last night (March 11).

Dr Sim, who is also Sarawak Minister of Public Health, Housing and Local Government (MPHLG) and Batu Kawah assemblyman, further said that he would fight for the RM100 million allocation under the 12th Malaysia Plan (12MP) mid-term review in addition to the RM140 million allocated under 12MP for flood mitigation and drainage upgrade for Batu Kawa in view of the extra volume of rainwater and cost increase in materials since Covid-19.

He also reminded that every Sarawakian must learn that climate change has arrived in Sarawak, not just in Europe, China, the United States, New Zealand, and Australia.

Thus, he called for everyone to play their roles and do their part in facing climate change. — DayakDaily
