KOTA SAMARAHAN, Aug 22: Rabies has claimed 87 human lives in Sarawak since July 2017, pushing the fatality rate among the 94 human cases recorded during the period to nearly 93 per cent.

According to a report by TVS, Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian said the alarming figure underscored the need for immediate action following any animal bite or scratch.

“Vaccinate your pets every year. Responsible pet ownership can create active protection within the local community.

“If bitten or scratched, clean the wound and seek treatment immediately. Wash any animal bite or scratch immediately with soap under running water for at least 15 minutes, then proceed directly to the nearest health clinic,” he said in his speech read by Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Dato Wee Hong Seng at the launching ceremony of the Stop Rabies Carnival 2026 here today.

He stressed that immediate treatment is crucial, as waiting for rabies symptoms to appear could be fatal once clinical symptoms begin.

Meanwhile, data from the Sarawak Veterinary Services Department verified as of Aug 20 showed that 23 dogs and three cats had tested positive for rabies so far this year, said Dr Sim.

He said the fight against rabies required a collective effort involving all segments of society, including children and youths, pet owners, non-governmental organisations, academic researchers, healthcare workers and community leaders.

“Rabies prevention across all sectors of society will help Sarawak achieve its State target while contributing to the global mission of Zero Human Rabies Deaths by 2030,” he said. — DayakDaily
