KUCHING, Dec 12: Democratic Action Party (DAP) candidate for N14 Batu Kawah Dr Kelvin Yii pledges to set up more affordable care service facilities for the elderly, persons with disabilities, and children in Sarawak.

According to Dr Yii, care challenges are not only confined to the elderly and also affects other segments of society such as those with family members who are facing disabilities, long-term illnesses and many others.

“With more resources coming into Sarawak from the federal government and even more devolution of power into the State in the future, Sarawak must start investing more into human development, particularly in this case, care services.

“That is why, as a society, we must ensure that we will build the necessary building blocks to protect the most vulnerable segments of our population,” he said in a press conference held at DAP headquarters here today.

He added, beyond investing in the care-giving segment, it would also create jobs for locals in the State, as well as bring other benefits to the State.

Dr Yii, who is also the Bandar Kuching MP said that he will come up with a numbers of measures that will benefit the people if he is given the mandate to represent the people of Batu Kawah constituency.

Among the measures is to call for the setting up of a startup or seed fund to encourage the establishment of more home-based care services as alternative to care homes.

Apart from that, he also plans to introduce an appropriate regulatory framework to ensure home-care givers receive the necessary training, including providing monthly childcare subsidies for each poor and middle income families.

Dr Yii is facing a four-cornered fight in the coming 12th Sarawak State Election against Dato Sri Dr Sim Kui Hian from Gabungan Parti Sarawak-Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (GPS-SUPP), Chai Kueh Khun from Parti Bumi Kenyalang (PBK) and Fong Pau Tek from Sarawak People’s Aspiration Party (Aspirasi). — DayakDaily
