KUCHING, Aug 24: The Democratic Action Party’s (DAP) repeated calls for ‘check and balance’ in Sarawak are nothing more than political theatre unless the party is prepared to scrutinise the federal government of which it is part, says the Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP) Kuching Branch Youth.
“If DAP is loud in Sarawak but quiet in Putrajaya, that is not check and balance. That is political theatre. DAP’s repeated call for ‘check and balance’ in Sarawak is a political trap meant to divert attention from its own record, principles, and credibility,” it said in a statement.
It said that DAP could not present itself as a watchdog in Sarawak while remaining selective on sensitive federal issues.
“If DAP truly cares about the people’s burden, it should explain what it has done at the federal level to seek safeguards and relief measures. Check and balance must begin with the government one is part of, not only with political opponents,” said the statement.
It went on to say that as DAP’s roots remain in Malayan politics, its priorities did not necessarily reflect Sarawak’s interests, and that the party’s setbacks in the Sabah, Johor, and Negeri Sembilan state elections showed how voters assessed its performance.
“This is not accidental. It is a warning from the people. Voters have seen that DAP speaks loudly about reform outside government but goes quiet in power. People are tired of empty talk without real results.”
It added that Sarawakians have not forgotten DAP special advisor Lim Guan Eng’s 2019 remarks that Sarawak would go bankrupt in three years under the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS), which it claimed Sarawak DAP had echoed but later remained silent on when Lim apologised.
“Sarawak did not go bankrupt. Instead, Sarawak has maintained sound finances, expanded its revenue base, implemented major infrastructure projects, and secured greater development autonomy.
“Sarawakians still remember who once talked down Sarawak. When DAP was proven wrong, it chose to keep quiet. How can such a party now ask Sarawakians to believe that it is here to build Sarawak?”
It added that while GPS was not afraid of scrutiny or criticism, it must be factual, constructive, and beneficial to the people—not reduced to political noise without workable solutions.
At the same time, the branch also lauded Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s repeated praises of Sarawak’s development under Abang Johari.
“If even Pakatan Harapan’s (PH) top leadership can recognise GPS’ performance, DAP’s attempt to package itself as the opposition in Sarawak is clearly contradictory.
“When DAP keeps opposing in Sarawak while its own national leadership praises Sarawak’s direction, people will see it as election theatre, not a sincere effort to build Sarawak.”
It added that Sarawakians needed a stable government, clear direction, practical service, and the ability to solve problems, not the extension of Malayan political battles into the Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUS). — DayakDaily
