KUCHING, June 6: Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi highlighted the pressing need for all stakeholders to harness advanced technologies to improve road safety in Malaysia.
After chairing the Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) Council Meeting yesterday, Nanta stressed that technological innovation can play a crucial role in reducing road accidents – including tragic incidents like the recent Gerik-Jeli East West Highway bus accident, which killed 15 Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students.
“I emphasise that the time has come for all relevant parties to actively play their roles in utilising advanced technologies to improve road safety,” he said in a Facebook post yesterday.
A key highlight of the meeting was the presentation of the Malaysian ITS Roadmap 2030 – a comprehensive national strategy aimed at building a smarter, safer, and more sustainable transportation ecosystem.
Nanta explained that ITS emphasises on the integration of technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), the Internet of Things (IoT), and autonomous vehicles to improve traffic efficiency and promote eco-friendly mobility.
During the meeting, one notable presentation came from a Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) research team led by Assoc Prof Dr Law Teik Hua, who introduced the Automated Road Defect Identification System (ARIDS).
Nanta noted that this AI-driven innovation offers a smart, data-driven approach to monitoring and planning road maintenance for the safety and comfort of road users
The meeting was attended by key stakeholders, including Deputy Minister of Transport Datuk Hasbi Habibollah, Deputy Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry, as well as senior representatives from the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation, Ministry of Home Affairs, Ministry of Housing, Government & Local Government, Ministry of Communications, National Digital Department, Royal Malaysian Customs Department, Federal Territories Department and National Disaster Management Agency. – DayakDaily
