MIRI, Sept 13: Education is taking centre stage as Sarawak’s primary weapon to break the cycle of poverty, a cornerstone vision shared by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg during his recent high-level engagement with the Asian Development Bank (ADB).

Speaking at the Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) Northern Zone Special Convention at Miri Indoor Stadium today, Abang Johari revealed that the ADB had expressed keen interest in Sarawak’s economic trajectory and its strategic model for poverty eradication.

‘They asked me, ‘Can you share with us the future of Sarawak?’

“They were very excited about Sarawak’s vision,’ he said.

He explained that expanding access to quality education is crucial to creating higher-value economic opportunities for the next generation, serving as a long-term solution to structural poverty.

Abang Johari emphasised that Sarawak’s broader economic transformation depends on opening up new growth drivers, specifically in energy, high-tech sectors, and the digital economy while maximising the State’s natural resources and local expertise.

He added that strengthening the capabilities of Sarawakians alongside responsible resource management will ensure economic expansion remains sustainable for decades to come.
