MIRI, Sept 13: Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has acknowledged that a leadership transition is inevitable, hinting that this could potentially be his final year in office while assuring that Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) is actively preparing its next generation of leaders.
Speaking at the Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) Northern Sarawak special convention in Miri today, Abang Johari stressed that the party has a robust system in place to mentor potential successors and ensure seamless political continuity.
“I am being frank, perhaps this is my final year. You cannot go against nature, even if your heart is young,” he said.
Abang Johari, 76, who has served as Premier and PBB president since January 2017, stated that political succession is an inescapable reality every party must confront to remain resilient.
“Leaders change. There comes a time when we say thank you, I am stepping aside, and someone new replaces me. We have to train our successors; the successors must be trained,” he emphasised.
He explained that PBB’s succession planning is comprehensive and structured, focusing on developing younger leaders across all branches rather than relying on a single individual.
“For every group, whether they are young people or new members, we have people being trained.
“Each area should have one or two potential successors ready to step forward,” he said.
While confirming he still possesses the energy to govern, the Premier reiterated that PBB’s longevity hinges on its ability to systematically nurture disciplined, community-minded leaders who can safeguard Sarawak’s political stability.
“PBB will always be there because we have a system to rejuvenate the party. But I will make the decision when the time comes,” he added. — DayakDaily
