KUCHING, Sept 13: Maintenance works along Jalan Sherip Masahor will commence shortly following the conclusion of an open tender process to appoint a contractor, says Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng.

Addressing recent public comments regarding overgrown grass along the road, Wee clarified that maintenance responsibility for the stretch was officially handed over from the Public Works Department (JKR) to MBKS in July 2026.

Following the handover, MBKS immediately put the necessary framework in place, including defining the scope of work, funding requirements, and procurement procedures.

“While the relevant allocation has yet to be disbursed, MBKS proceeded with an open tender to ensure that the maintenance works could move forward in accordance with proper procurement procedures and principles of transparency and accountability,” he said in a press statement today.

He noted that the open tender process concluded last Friday, and the contract is expected to be awarded shortly.

“Grass cutting and comprehensive upkeep along the road will begin as soon as the appointment is finalised,” he added.

The mayor said MBKS understands the public’s demand for quick action but stressed the council must strictly follow standard tender procedures when spending public money.

He also stressed the need for public feedback to be considered alongside the corrective measures already being taken.

“For MBKS, the focus is straightforward: identify the issue, take responsibility where it falls within our jurisdiction, follow the proper process, and get the work done,” Wee said, adding that MBKS would monitor the work until it is completed. — DayakDaily
