Vandalism of Rural Water Supply Department assets causing unnecessary spending, water supply interruption

Chang Kuet Shian

KUCHING, Jan 18: The Rural Water Supply Department (JBALB) is facing rampant vandalism towards their assets and properties in Sarawak.

Its director Chang Kuet Shian, without disclosing the figures and affected areas in Sarawak, says that the rampant vandalism is very challenging to the department.

“It will take us time and money to put it (the assets) in place. Sometimes it takes longer than expected, and for what?

“Many people suffer from the actions of the vandals, and it hinders our progress,” he said at the JBALB Media Engagement event held at a leading hotel in the city.

He said that many people are affected because of such acts, and JBALB would have to spend unnecessary funding to replace the broken assets and reinstate or repair them.

When pushed further on the monetary figure of the losses, Chang only indicated that the figure varies from month to month and year.

“As a consequence, the government has to intervene with funding that could be used for other things. This vandalism causes unnecessary interruption of water supply and spending of public money,” he added. — DayakDaily
