UTS scholarships available to students from low income groups, says chairman

University Technology Sarawak (UTS)

SIBU, Nov 16: University Technology Sarawak (UTS) is not a higher institution of learning only for the rich, says its chairman Dr Annuar Rapaee.

In a Facebook post, he said the State government provides scholarships for students from low income backgrounds to study there.

He said this in response to a number of messages from the public saying that the university is not for the poor due to its high fees.

“I don’t want residents from villages and longhouses to look at the university from its outside: The Iban community staying in longhouses in Pasai area, Muslim community in Teku area and Chinese community in Bawang Assan and Sungai Bidut areas. Every day they are passing by the university,” he said.

Explaining further, the incumbent Nangka assemblyman said the State government is bearing the full fee of RM10,000 for the foundation programme for each student while for undergraduate and post-graduate programmes, scholarships for up to 50 per cent of fees are available.

“B40 and M40 parents, don’t worry. The government is offering 100 scholarships to Bumiputera and another 100 scholarships to non-Bumiputera by bearing 80 per cent of the fee,” he said.

All these incentives, he said, are for all who can qualify as the university is not looking at skin colour or race of the applicants. — DayakDaily
