SIBU, Feb 17: Old graveyards in rural areas will be repaired by the Unit For Other Religion (Unifor) as part of its expanded role.

Minister of Food Industry, Commodities and Regional Development Minister Dato Sri Dr Stephen Rundi Utom said this was necessary as these traditional graveyards such as those which belong to the Iban community are in poor condition, having been left unmanaged for long periods.

“Unifor under the care of the Deputy Premier of Sarawak Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas has agreed to extend assistance to the followers of traditional religions including their cemeteries so that they look neater,” Rundi after presenting Unifor cheques to seven missionary schools from Sibu, Meradong and Sarikei areas.

The Kemena assemblyman said that in addition to helping Christians, Unifor will also assist followers of other religions in the repair of their respective cemeteries and provide the appropriate financial assistance.

“All these can be requested,” he said.

Touching on aid to missionary schools, he said, Unifor will also provide assistance to schools in need in terms of rehabilitation, maintenance, provision of ICT tools and related equipment to provide convenience to students, especially in rural areas.

A total of RM826,770 was presented to seven schools based on their previous requests.

Also present were Pakan assemblyman Tan Sri William Mawan Ikom, Sarawak State Agriculture Department Director Dominic Chunggat and Sibu Divisional Deputy Resident Christopher Ranggau Unting. — DayakDaily
