KUCHING, Aug 28: Blessed Sacrament Church in BDC has received a grant from the Unit for Other Religions (Unifor) to support upgrading works to its church building, with Kota Sentosa assemblyman Wilfred Yap handing over the cheque to the church’s Parish Council today.
The grant was approved following the church’s application for funding assistance, which Yap had supported and advocated for.
Speaking at the handover ceremony, Yap said he was pleased that the application had successfully secured support from the Sarawak government, describing it as a reflection of the State’s commitment to ensuring places of worship across different communities are properly maintained and supported.
“I am pleased to be able to hand over this Unifor grant to the Parish Council of Blessed Sacrament Church BDC today. I had earlier supported the church’s application because I believe that our places of worship play an important role not only in spiritual life, but also in bringing communities together,” he said in a statement today.
Yap said the upgrading of places of worship forms part of Sarawak’s broader efforts to strengthen community infrastructure and enhance facilities that serve local residents.
He added that the state government’s approach focuses on responding to the needs of communities and ensuring that assistance reaches all groups regardless of race or religion.
“This is what a Sarawak First approach is about — listening to the needs of our communities and working together to find practical solutions. Regardless of race or religion, every community deserves the opportunity to have safe, functional and conducive facilities,” he said.
Yap also expressed appreciation to the Sarawak government and Unifor for their continued support for places of worship throughout the state.
He congratulated the Parish Council and members of Blessed Sacrament Church BDC on securing the funding and expressed hope that the grant would assist the church in carrying out the planned improvements.
“I hope this grant will help the church carry out the necessary improvements and provide a better environment for parishioners and the wider community for many years to come,” he said.
Yap also reaffirmed his commitment to continue working closely with community and religious organisations in Kota Sentosa to facilitate assistance and development opportunities for the benefit of local communities. — DayakDaily
