Sungai Ma’aw tragedy: Body of missing man found, one individual still missing

SIBU, Jan 9: The body of one of two missing persons feared drowned when their car plunged into Sungai Ma’aw was found yesterday evening.

Sibu District police chief ACP Zulkipli Suhaili said the deceased, 61, was found at Batang Lebaan about 10km from the Tanjung Kunyit ferry point.

“The victim’s body was identified by his son after it was found by a member of the public at 6.10pm,” he said.


The police when informed of the discovery had rushed to the location at 10.30pm.

The body was then sent to Sibu Hospital for further action.

Zulkipli said police received a report on Saturday (Jan 7) from a 39-year-old local man at 2.03am who reported receiving a phone call from his cousin who said the car he was riding in had plunged into the river.

According to the cousin, there were two other passengers in the car.

“Following the report, the police launched a search and rescue (SAR) operation with the Fire and Rescue Department.

“The victim who survived was found at 7.30 in the morning and is now receiving treatment at Sibu Hospital,” Zulkipli said, adding the former is reported to be in stable condition.

The survivor is a 38-year-old man. Still missing is a woman in her 40s whose identity has not yet been disclosed. — DayakDaily
