KUCHING, Apr 27: The 2026 Malaysia Games (Sukma) in Selangor will proceed as planned with cost-saving measures and prudent spending in place after the Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, gave his consent.
In a statement, the Ministry of Youth and Sports said Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim was granted an audience with the state ruler on Thursday (April 23), who consented to the staging of Sukma from August 15 to 24, with an emphasis on cost-saving measures and prudent spending.
Minister Dr Mohammed Taufiq Johari then expressed gratitude to the sultan for his consent and thanked the prime minister for prioritising the nation’s young athletes by deciding to proceed with the games.
“The 2026 Sukma serves as a key platform for the selection and preparation of young athletes to represent Malaysia in the 2027 SEA Games, which will be held here,” he said.
Additionally, he had discussed the matter with Selangor Menteri Besar Amirudin Shari, who pledged that the state government will give its full cooperation.
He also said that the 2026 Sukma secretariat will present the latest updates on preparations for the games at a meeting this Thursday (Apr 30).
On Apr 20, the Selangor sultan suggested that the 2026 Sukma be postponed until the Middle East conflict subsides, citing the high allocation required to organise the event.
Following that, on Apr 23, it was initially announced that a special meeting will be held on Thursday to decide whether the 2026 Sukma will continue. — DayakDaily
