KUCHING, June 29: Kota Sentosa assemblyman Wilfred Yap has called for stronger public cooperation to put an end to persistent illegal dumping at Lorong 5, Jalan Sungai Tapang, which has been repeatedly cleaned up by authorities but continues to reoccur.
Yap, who visited the site today together with Penghulu Lai Boon Khee, met residents and assessed the ongoing issue of indiscriminate waste disposal, which has been a recurring concern in the area.
Residents reportedly voiced frustration that the illegal dumping continues despite multiple clean-up operations carried out by the Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) and waste management contractor Trienekens.
“The rubbish at the location has already been cleared more than five times, yet irresponsible individuals continue to dump household waste, bulky items, construction debris and other rubbish at the same spot,” he said in a statement today.
Yap noted that MPP has installed warning signboards at the site to remind the public that illegal dumping is an offence, but the measure has yet to deter offenders.
“The repeated clean-up works involve significant manpower, machinery and public funds which could otherwise be utilised for improving other public facilities and services within the constituency,” he added.
Yap stressed that maintaining a clean environment is a shared responsibility and urged the public to dispose of waste properly at designated collection points.
He also called on residents to assist enforcement efforts by reporting illegal dumping activities, including taking photographs of offenders or their vehicles, and submitting them to the relevant authorities or his office for action.
“Keeping Kota Sentosa clean requires the collective effort of everyone. A clean neighbourhood not only provides a healthier living environment but also reflects the civic responsibility and pride of the community,” he said.
Yap also expressed appreciation to concerned residents for their continued vigilance and cooperation in highlighting the issue, expressing hope that stronger public awareness and enforcement support would finally resolve the recurring problem at the site. — DayakDaily
