ASAJAYA, Aug 31: Internal conflicts and poor governance within silat schools and associations could undermine the development of young practitioners and hamper their chances of progressing to higher-level competitions such as the Malaysia Games (Sukma), says Sarawak Minister of Youth, Sports, and Entrepreneur Development Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.
In a Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas) report, urged silat schools and associations across the State to put aside internal disputes and strengthen unity, discipline, and governance if the traditional martial art is to grow sustainably and continue producing young talents.
“When a silat school has problems, it indicates that there is some lack of discipline. This needs to be properly managed so that the school can continue to exist and grow over time,” he said at the closing ceremony of Asajaya Berpencak Silat held in conjunction with Pesta Asajaya 2026 at the Asajaya District Office Hall here on Sunday (Aug 30).
Abdul Karim added that umbrella bodies such as Rumpun Silat Sarawak (RSS) play an important role as a platform to unite all silat schools in the State fairly and inclusively, without discrimination or dominance by any school.
He also stressed that the Sarawak government was prepared to provide support, including financial assistance, to associations with clear and transparent management structures and that demonstrated a commitment to elevating silat as a heritage art and a platform for youth development.
“Financial problems will not be an issue if we look at the management structure and the intention (nawaitu) to uphold this heritage art of silat, provided it is carried out honestly and is not overly personal in nature,” he said. — DayakDaily
