Steamship boiler, buildings among WWII remnants in Kg Siniawan Jepun to be gazetted as heritage sites

KUCHING, May 23: Japanese structures dating from before World War Two at Kampung Siniawan Jepun, Serian including a steamship boiler have been identified and proposed to be gazetted as heritage buildings, monuments and sites under the Sarawak Heritage Ordinance 2019.

Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said the Brooke Coal Mine at Gunung Ngili, Simunjan and the megaliths at Bario are also included.


“Community engagement programmes on heritage conservation will be held between local communities and NGOs, and related agencies in Serian, Simunjan and Bario.

“The programmes will include the conservation and preservation of tangible and intangible heritage such as historical and cultural buildings, monuments and sites.

“My ministy will work closely with Sarawak Museum Department to implement these important projects,” he said in his ministerial winding-up speech at the Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting here today.

Abdul Karim, who is also Asajaya assemblyman, said one of his ministry’s foremost tasks is to enhance policies on cultural heritage and tourism sustainability by improving the preservation and management of heritage.

“With the new Sarawak Heritage Ordinance 2019, the State’s tangible and intangible heritage will be identified, protected, and documented with proper heritage management and preservation plans,” he added. — DayakDaily
