KUCHING, Sept 5: Coin collectors are in for a treat as a limited-edition Malaysia Day commemorative coin is being introduced for the first time in conjunction with the national-level Malaysia Day 2026 celebration in Sarawak.
Sarawak Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Minister Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said only a limited quantity of the commemorative coin has been produced, making it a potentially sought-after collector’s item.
“For the first time, there will be a commemorative coin. It’s a limited edition, but not many are being produced. But coin collectors will be very happy to see the commemorative coin for Malaysia Day,” he said during a press conference held at the Waterfront Hotel here today.
The Malaysia Unity Coin Collection is a collaboration between Thong Bowl, Thong Cha Plus and the Department of Museums Malaysia, launched in conjunction with the National Month and Malaysia Day 2026 campaign.
Themed “Warisan Dalam Perpaduan”, the collection carries the message of unity while incorporating elements of local identity and culture from across Malaysia.
Among the accompanying items is an enamel pin featuring the Nabau, a mythical serpent associated with the heritage and cultural traditions of Sarawak’s indigenous communities.
The collection is being offered from Aug 31, National Day, until Sept 27, after the Malaysia Day celebration on Sept 16.
Members of the public can obtain the limited-edition collection through participating Thong Bowl and Thong Cha Plus outlets, although the collection is currently available only at physical outlets in Kuala Lumpur and Selangor.
The coin and enamel pin are offered under a purchase-with-purchase mechanism and cannot be bought separately.
Customers must first purchase either the Mega Cendol Green Milk Tea or Cendol Green Milk Tea before adding the commemorative coin or “Warisan” enamel pin to the same purchase.
The collection is available while stocks last, with the limited quantity expected to make it a quick-grab item for collectors.
The national-level Malaysia Day celebration will be held at Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) on Sept 16, with about 5,000 invited guests expected to attend. — DayakDaily
