Staged road closures in Kuching City centre starting 3pm to midnight for deity birthday procession this Sunday (March 31)

KUCHING, March 28: Multiple roads in the centre of Kuching City, spanning from Main Bazaar to Jalan Ban Hock and Padungan, will be closed in stages starting from 3pm until midnight this Sunday (March 31) for the Seng Ong Kong deity’s birthday procession, with an expected participation of 202 troupes.

In a statement today, Kuching District Police Chief ACP Ahsmon Bajah has urged the public to refrain parking their cars along the road shoulders and suggested utilising alternative routes to reduce traffic congestion, given an anticipated influx of about 20,000 visitors for the temple procession.

The roads affected by staged closures are as follows:


  • Jalan Main Bazaar heading towards Jalan Tun Abang Haji Openg
  • Jalan Tun Abang Haji Openg towards Padang Merdeka
    Jalan Tabuan towards Jalan Ban Hock
  • Jalan Tabuan towards Jalan Wayang
  • Jalan Padungan towards Jalan Bukit Mata
  • Jalan Temple towards Jalan Main Bazaar

The procession will commence from Jalan Wayang, proceeding to Jalan Tabuan, Jalan Ban Hock, Jalan Padungan, Jalan Bukit Mata, Jalan Bazaar, Jalan Gambier, Jalan Khoo Hun Yeang, Jalan Tun Abang Haji Openg, Jalan Carpenter, Jalan Ewe Hai, before circling back to Jalan Wayang.

To mitigate traffic congestion, the public are advised to use alternative routes.

Vehicles travelling via Jalan Tabuan from Jalan Simpang Tiga may consider taking Jalan Central Timur or through Jalan McDougall to bypass the closure at Jalan Wayang.

Motorists coming from Jalan Haji Taha are advised to make a U-turn at the Divisional Mosque roundabout to avoid congestion near the Jalan Gambier closure.

As for motorists coming from Jalan Pending, they are advised to make a U-turn at the Sri Aman roundabout to avoid the congestion at Jalan Padungan.
