KUCHING, May 18: The Sarawak government has assured parents that students under the Yayasan Sarawak International Secondary School (YSISS) system will still be able to sit for the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examination, ensuring continued access to local higher education pathways while also being encouraged to pursue studies abroad.

Sarawak Minister for Education, Innovation and Talent Development (MEITD) Dato Sri Roland Sagah Wee Inn said the provision allows students to remain eligible for admission into public universities in Malaysia.

“We are giving them the opportunity to sit for SPM. This will allow them to meet the requirements set by local universities to enter higher learning institutions in Malaysia,” he said.

He said this at a press conference at the Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUS) complex after delivering his ministerial winding-up speech today.

Sagah emphasised Bahasa Malaysia and History remain key subjects within the system to ensure students continue to meet national academic requirements, including eligibility for government employment.

“A credit in Bahasa Malaysia is still required for government employment, so we want to ensure students continue to meet those requirements,” he noted.

At the same time, he said the State government hopes YSISS students will pursue further studies overseas to gain broader exposure to emerging technologies and advanced fields.

“We hope they will go abroad to learn new technologies and gain wider exposure,” he added. — DayakDaily
