SIBU, Feb 1: Motorists can now enjoy a smoother drive along Pan Borneo Highway from Sibu Airport Interchange to Sg Gua near Selangau.

Pelawan state assemblyman David Wong, who inspected the project on Friday said that to-date, 11 diversions had been closed which opened up some 20km of new alignment road that is making travelling much smoother and easier.

“There is another stretch of the old road to be closed by February this year which would open up another 1.6km of new alignment road to the road users,” he said today.

Wong said that in total there are some 28 diversions to be closed before Hari Raya and Gawai Dayak as the contractor is on schedule to close them all.

This was his third inspection tour of the 46km of WPC07 from the Sibu Airport interchange to Sg Gua of the Pan Borneo Highway since December 2019 and the first after the Lunar New year to check on the progress of the construction work as well as the conditions of the road.

The purpose of the Friday inspection was to make sure that the road conditions did not deteriorate over the Lunar New Year holidays with the heavy traffic during the peak of the ‘balik kampung’ period.

During the inspection, they found some emerging potholes along certain stretches of the road which the contractor has promised to act immediately. Apart from that, the general condition was still acceptable.

The Pelawan assemblyman was accompanied by the project manager and construction manager of LBU, the construction manager of HSL S/B and his team, divisional JKR’s representative and the crews from RTM to have another inspection of the road.

“During my last inspection tour on January 17 which was a night inspection tour, we have experienced much improvement on the road conditions as compared to my first visit prior in December 2019. We had seen 7 diversions been closed, the diversions are all tar-sealed, the road barricades rearranged, the road safety improved with more blinkers and illuminated road signs been installed,” he added. —DayakDaily
