KUCHING, Sept 5: A RM5.8 million project to install and rehabilitate street lighting along an 11.9-kilometre stretch of the Petra Jaya–Rambungan route is being implemented to improve road safety, particularly at night.
In a Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas) report, Sarawak Deputy Minister in the Premier’s Department (Project Coordinator for Regional Development Agencies, DBKU, and Islamic Affairs) and Pantai Damai assemblyman Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi said the project would provide a more stable and reliable lighting and electricity supply system.
He said the project would also address inadequate existing lighting caused by vandalism and the deterioration of street-lighting infrastructure.
“Improved lighting is expected to enhance road users’ visibility at night, thereby reducing the risk of accidents and improving the safety of drivers, motorcyclists, pedestrians and the local community,” he said during the handover ceremony for the Street Lighting Provision Project at Lebuh Pehin Sri Haji Adenan Satem here today.
The project, which connects the Pantai Damai and Tupong State constituencies, is expected to benefit residents and road users in both areas.
Valued at RM5,828,380, the project is scheduled for completion on June 16, 2027, and involves the installation and rehabilitation of high- and low-voltage systems along the route, particularly in the Matang Section.
Among the project’s main components are the construction of 11kV overhead lines equipped with six sets of 50kVA 11/433kV transformers and related accessories, as well as the installation of 794 units of LED streetlights.
The scope also includes the installation of underground cables, mini pillars, control boxes and related accessories to ensure the lighting system operates more effectively.
The project is being carried out by Arena Megasuria Sdn Bhd, with Perunding Teknikal Consult Sdn Bhd serving as the project consultant, while the Divisional Engineer of the Public Works Department (JKR) Kuching Division is the superintending officer.
Also present were Sarawak Premier’s Political Secretary and Tupong assemblyman Dato Fazzrudin Abdul Rahma, and Sarawak JKR director Datu Cassidy Morris. — DayakDaily
