“I am saddened by the news of the blast, and I’ve been informed that the victims have been transported to Sarawak General Hospital for treatment. Some were reportedly in severe conditions,” Dr Yii said in a statement.

He will leave Kuala Lumpur for Kuching after the Parliament sitting tomorrow.

“I will pay a visit to the victims and family members of the tragedy to offer them our support and any other assistance required.

“I will also give some allocations to help the families of those affected by the accident. We are now gathering more information on how we can be of better help to those affected.

“I urge for a thorough investigation by the relevant authorities into the accident to determine whether there was negligence in any of the renovation processes and also if proper construction guidelines were followed,” he said.

Dr Yii added that those responsible, if proven, must take responsibility for the tragedy and proper compensation should be made.

He thanked all the authorities involved, including officers from the police and Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba), who helped to control the situation and carry out rescue operations.

He also thanked the doctors in the hospitals that were on standby during the accident and offering not just medical aid to the victims but also psychological counselling and first aid to those affected.

“On top of that, I want to thank all the volunteers and members of the public that offered their help during the tragedy.

“I also want to offer my condolences to the families of those who lost their lives. We mourn and pray together during this troubling time,” Dr Yii said. — DayakDaily
