KUCHING, April 22: Sarawak has proposed setting up a Sarawak Trade and Tourism Office (STATO) in Kalimantan, Indonesia, following the existing ones in Singapore and Brunei.

According to TVS, Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan said STATO’s establishment is in line with the State government’s efforts to expand the economic and ecotourism markets further.

He said the office would act as a platform to promote trade and culture, as well as open new opportunities in the economic and tourism sectors, while benefiting both sides.

“This is in the works, and we will try to identify a suitable building. Actually, last year, I had plans to go to Pontianak (Indonesia) to look for one, but I didn’t have the chance.

“This year, we will go look for a suitable office to set up STATO in Kalimantan,” he said during an Aidilfitri programme at Kampung Pahlawan in Limbang today.

Awang Tengah added that this initiative is to show the Sarawak government’s commitment to strengthening cooperation and regional integration with the country, as well as boost the State’s trading and business markets.

He added that the government is aware of how important the small and medium industries are in their role in contributing to the economy and improving living standards, especially in rural areas. — DayakDaily
