KUCHING, April 22: Sarawak is prepared to increase its electricity supply to Sabah by up to 80 megawatts (MW), subject to the capacity of Sabah’s power grid system, as Sarawak’s northern grid project nears completion.

According to a Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas) news report, Sarawak Minister for Utility and Telecommunication, Dato Sri Julaihi Narawi, said the State had initially agreed to supply 30MW to Sabah, which could be ramped up to 50MW or more depending on current demand and infrastructure readiness.

“Originally, we agreed to supply 30MW to Sabah, subject to the completion of the northern grid in Sarawak. Once it is completed, we can supply 30MW or even increase it to 50MW,” he told reporters after attending the Energy Commission of Sabah (ECoS) 2025 Hari Raya gathering at the Sabah International Convention Centre (SICC) in Kota Kinabalu today.

“And of course, if more is needed, we may consider increasing it to 80MW, depending on Sabah’s grid capacity,” he added.

Julaihi also confirmed that the construction of the Northern Grid in Sarawak is in its final stages and on track for completion by the end of this year.

“Based on current progress, it is in the final phase of completion, and we are targeting year-end for it to be ready,” he said.

Also present at the event were Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Hajiji Noor, Deputy Minister for Utility (Sarawak Energy and Petros) Dato Ibrahim Baki, Ministry of Utility and Telecommunication Sarawak permanent secretary Datu Jafri Lias, ECoS chief executive officer (CEO) Datuk Ir Abdul Nasser Abdul Wahid, and Sarawak Gas Distribution director Kasvenda Kassim. — DayakDaily
