SIBU, May 8: The Sibu Divisional Disaster Management Committee (SDDMC) is ready to face any possible increase in Covid-19 cases following the Hari Raya Aidilfitri and Gawai Dayak celebrations.

Its chairman Wong Hee Sieng said various facilities have been readied.

“We are ready with relevant staff, quarantine centres (PKRC) and other needed facilities to face an increase in cases if it happens,” he said when met by reporters after officiating at the World Red Cross Day and Red Crescent Day organised by the Malaysian Red Crescent Society (PBSMM) Sibu chapter here today.

Wong, who is also the Sibu Division Resident and PBSMM Sibu patron, also said that the field hospital at Sibu Hospital is also ready to face the possibility of an increase in Covid-19 cases after the two festivals.

“It is already operating where it has 100 beds,” he said, adding it will serve the Central Region and not just Sibu Division.

Earlier in his speech at the event, Wong described PBSMM as very important because of its volunteer work.

He cited as an example, PBSMM Sibu volunteers during the vaccination process last year who helped frontline staff at vaccination centres and hospitals.

“Their volunteer efforts have helped and assisted JPBBS and frontliners in launching the vaccination process.

“Therefore, this spirit of volunteerism is very important not only for the locals but also the country in helping when any crisis strikes,” he explained.

He also thanked the members of PBSMM Sibu for their sacrifices and carrying out their responsibilities over the years, especially during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Wong also urged PBSMM Sibu to recruit as many individuals as possible to join the organisation.

Also present were two PBSMM Sibu Temenggong Branch Advisors Dato Vincent Lau and Datuk Lau Ngie Hua and PBSMM Sibu chairman Penghulu Chua Hiong Kee. — DayakDaily
