KUCHING, March 13: Sarawak has firmly established itself as Malaysia’s premier hub for shipbuilding and ship repair, with numerous vessels built to international standards in the state being exported worldwide.

These vessels reach destinations from Indonesia, Singapore, United Arab Emirates, Australia, Brunei Darussalam, China and Europe.

Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan stressed the significance of Sarawak’s shipbuilding industry, with 68 out of 100 shipyards in Malaysia located in the State.

He emphasised its niche and strategic role in driving economic growth and creating employment opportunities.

“There are untapped opportunities in emerging sectors such as carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS), green transportation, and sustainable oil and gas sector for our shipbuilding industry to explore.

“However, the key players must enhance their capabilities by adopting new digital technologies,” he said in a statement today.

These remarks were made following the inauguration of an exhibition participated by 12 Sarawakian shipbuilding companies at the Asia Pacific Maritime Expo 2024 in Singapore.

Awang Tengah, who is also the Minister for International Trade, Industry and Investment (Mintred), highlighted that the maritime industry will continue to remain strong amidst increasing demands in oil, gas and logistics, which are expected to propel future growth and competitiveness.

He applauded the active participation of local shipbuilders in the exhibition and their willingness to explore new markets and opportunities.

The initiative was coordinated by Mintred together with Sarawak Trade and Tourism Office in Singapore (Statos), and Sarawak Association of Marine Industries (Samin). — DayakDaily
