Sarawak to ink MoU with China’s Three Gorges, Shanghai Electric for 1,000MW floating solar farm at Bakun

KUCHING, June 10: The Sarawak Government is expected to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with China Three Gorges International Ltd (CGTI) and Shanghai Electric Power T&D Group Co. Ltd to facilitate studies and collaborations for the potential development of a floating solar farm with a capacity of up to 1,000 megawatts (MW) at the Bakun Hydroelectric Plant (HEP) catchment area.

According to a Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas) news report, this significant green energy collaboration will be formalised today during the 2025 International Photovoltaic Power Generation and Smart Energy Exhibition and Conference, held at the National Exhibition and Convention Centre (NECC), Intercontinental Shanghai Hongqiao in Shanghai.

Sarawak continues to gain global recognition for its forward-looking sustainable energy agenda, having been invited to share its vision at the world’s largest and most influential solar and smart energy trade event, which runs from June 10 to 13.

The event features over 3,000 exhibitors from 95 countries and serves as a premier platform for policy dialogues, market trend analysis, and global networking among energy stakeholders.

Representing the Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, Deputy Minister for Utility (Sarawak Energy Berhad and PETROS), Dato Ibrahim Baki, will speak at the conference today. He is leading Sarawak’s delegation on a three-day official working visit to China.

The 2025 International Photovoltaic Power Generation and Smart Energy Exhibition and Conference, held at the National Exhibition and Convention Centre (NECC), Intercontinental Shanghai Hongqiao in Shanghai.

The conference convenes global experts, academics, researchers, entrepreneurs, and top-level representatives from China’s national solar PV and renewable energy institutions, as well as international solar associations from Europe, Asia, and the Americas.

Following the MoU signing, the Sarawak delegation will visit the Shanghai Electric Headquarters in Minhang District at 11am local time.

Later in the evening, Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Professor Dr Sim Kui Hian, Ibrahim, Sarawak Energy Group chief executive officer Datuk Sharbini Suhaili, and other officials are scheduled to pay a courtesy call on the Mayor of Shanghai, Gong Zheng, at the Shanghai Jiushi Hengshan Grand Hotel.

The official visit will conclude on Wednesday with a trip to the prestigious Fudan University campus at 2pm local time.

The delegation aims to explore the university’s cutting-edge advancements in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and identify potential areas for strategic collaboration between Sarawak and the institution. — DayakDaily
