KUCHING, Sept 1: Sarawak’s energy firms have been urged to utilise Sirim standards and certifications as a springboard to bigger markets and higher-value opportunities as the State strengthens its presence in regional and global supply chains.
According to a report by Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas), Deputy Minister for Utilities and Telecommunications Sarawak Datuk Ibrahim Baki said the certifications could help local companies demonstrate their quality, reliability, and compliance to customers and business partners.
“The Sarawak government’s priority is not only to create new industrial opportunities, but also to ensure local companies are equipped with the systems, skills and technical capabilities needed to meet market requirements,” he said, speaking at the Sirim Updates & Networking Session 2026 held at Pullman Hotel, Kuching today.
Ibrahim said Sarawak companies have significant potential to increase their participation in domestic and global supply chains.
However, he said this would require ongoing efforts to strengthen technical capabilities, quality management, and the ability to meet major customers’ requirements.
“Moving forward, we want to see more Sarawak companies use standards and certifications as a means of accessing larger markets and higher-value opportunities, particularly in the energy sector,” he said.
At the event, Ibrahim also presented ISO 29001 Quality Management Systems for Petroleum, Petrochemical, and Natural Gas Industries certificates and Sirim Product Certification Scheme certificates to successful recipients.
He encouraged industry players to leverage Sirim’s expertise and engagement sessions to understand new requirements and strengthen their capabilities.
Ibrahim also hoped the ISO 29001 recipients’ achievement would encourage more Sarawak companies to strengthen their capabilities and explore opportunities in wider markets.
Sirim certification is an official approval showing that a product, system, or person meets specific Malaysian and international standards for safety, quality, and reliability. — DayakDaily
