KUCHING, May 18: A total of 14,505 out of 18,799 cases registered in Sarawak Native Courts since 1992 have been resolved, reflecting a 77 per cent settlement rate across disputes involving adat breaches, civil matters, native status applications and appeals.

Minister in the Premier’s Department Dato Sri John Sikie Tayai said the figures covered all levels of Native Courts throughout Sarawak as of April this year.

“The remaining cases were being addressed with the Native Courts making every effort to ensure pending matters are resolved promptly and efficiently.

“This shows the effectiveness of the continuous efforts undertaken by the Native Courts and reflects the growing capability of our community leaders and court personnel in managing disputes more effectively,” he said.

He said this during his winding-up speech at the State Legislative Assembly (DUS) sitting today.

John added that the Sarawak government would continue strengthening the Native Courts institution through continuous engagement, training programmes and administrative improvements.

According to him, the measures were intended to ensure the institution remained effective, credible and responsive to the people’s needs. — DayakDaily
