KUCHING, May 18: Adat marriage and divorce records in Sarawak will soon be available digitally, enabling individuals to conveniently retrieve their certificates through their SarawakPass profiles.

Minister in the Premier’s Department Dato Sri John Sikie Tayai said the initiative is part of the Native Marriage Electronic System Version 2 currently being undertaken by the Majlis Adat Istiadat Sarawak (MAIS) under the Thirteenth Malaysia Plan (13MP).

“The upgraded system would allow Adat marriage and divorce certificates to be accessed online by the individuals concerned, providing more convenient digital access to their records through SarawakPass.

“This is among the most significant enhancements under the Native Marriage Electronic System Version 2,” he said during his winding-up speech in the Sarawak Legislative Assembly today.

Apart from the marriage system upgrade, John said MAIS is also implementing the Cataloguing of Oral Traditions System Version 2 to improve the management and documentation of Adat-related data.

He said the project is aimed at preserving endangered oral traditions, customary knowledge and culture in digital form while strengthening systematic documentation and centralised management of Adat knowledge.

According to him, both digital enhancement projects are intended to strengthen MAIS’ capacity in preserving the Adat, cultures and traditions of Sarawak’s native communities. — DayakDaily
