KUCHING, May 20: With its first batch of 500,000 doses of Sinovac Covid-19 vaccine approved by the federal government, Sarawak can now proceed to procure more vaccines as and when required to accelerate the State’s immunisation programme.

Deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri Dr James Jemut Masing, in stating this, congratulated Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg on his achievement in securing additional vaccine doses on its own on top of supplies from the federal government.

“Abang Jo has done it! Putrajaya has allowed us (Sarawak) to purchase 500,000 (doses) of (Sinovac) vaccines to keep our people safe!

“Well done, CM! Sarawak can now continue to purchase more vaccines as and when required,” he said in a statement today.

Masing, who is also Infrastructure and Ports Development Minister, urged the general public not to be complacent or drop their guard despite Sarawak being able to acquire more vaccines.

“In spite of these 500,000 doses of vaccines and more, we must continue to adhere to our SOP (standard operating procedure) as instructed by SDMC (State Disaster Management Committee),” he said.

Yesterday (May 19) during a work visit to assess the Covid-19 situation in Bintulu, Abang Johari told the press that Sarawak has gotten the green light from the federal government to procure 500,000 doses of Sinovac for the first phase of the State immunisation programme.

While more vaccines will be acquired in the second phase, he added Sarawak also got the approval to rope in private hospitals which have been gazetted to administer vaccines especially in urban areas to speed up the Covid-19 immunisation rollout in Sarawak. — DayakDaily
