KUCHING, March 17: Sarawak is seeking to extend border operating hours with Brunei to midnight during the upcoming Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebrations in a bid to ease long-standing congestion issues at the land checkpoints.
According to a TVS news report, Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan said discussions with Brunei are underway to address traffic congestion at border crossings, which often worsens during festive seasons and school holidays.
“Like last year, we are initiating talks with Brunei to better manage traffic flow and reduce congestion, especially at border entry points,” he told reporters after a Hari Raya aid distribution event at Masjid Jannatul Firdaus in Limbang yesterday (March 16).
He added that previous efforts during last year’s festive season had yielded positive results, and he hopes for similar cooperation this time around.
The discussion follows Brunei’s recent move to extend operating hours at its land border checkpoints until midnight during Chinese New Year celebrations.
The extended hours involved checkpoints at the Ujong Jalan Control Post Complex, Temporary Immigration Control Post Labu, Temporary Immigration Control Post Kuala Lurah, and Sungai Tujoh Immigration Control Post.
Also present at the event were Deputy Minister of Transport Datuk Hasbi Habibollah, Deputy Minister of Food Industry, Commodity, and Regional Development Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Ismail, Bukit Kota assemblyman Dato Paulus Palu Gumbang, and Political Secretary to the Premier, Awangku Jinal Abedin Dato Pengiran Jawa. — DayakDaily
