KUCHING, April 23: Taman Tasik Desa Ilmu is poised to become a new landmark for Kota Samarahan, featuring the iconic ‘Perahu Tambang’ design concept that celebrates the district’s rich history and cultural heritage.
During the pre-launch ceremony of the project yesterday, Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Sarawak Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah emphasised the cultural significance of the design choice.

“This design not only highlights the local identity, but also upholds the history and culture of the local community,” Abdul Karim stated, according to a report by the Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas).
The Minister noted that the project represents an important initiative in transforming Kota Samarahan into a vibrant satellite town with enhanced livability and recreational opportunities for residents.
The RM6.8 million project, which complements the Boulevard Samarahan project, has reached 22.43 per cent completion since construction began in November 2024. The park is scheduled for full completion by November 2025.
Spanning 9.38 hectares, the park will feature comprehensive amenities including parking facilities, public toilets, jogging paths, and small bridges that are expected to become major attractions for visitors.

Abdul Karim elaborated that the ‘Perahu Tambang’ concept will be expressed through key structural elements of the park, including the distinctive roof design and pillars that highlight the rowing movement of the traditional boat.
The project is a result of strategic planning by the Samarahan Regional Integrated Development Agency (IRSDA) and is being implemented by the Kota Samarahan Municipal Council (MPKS).
Regarding the Boulevard Samarahan development, Abdul Karim described it as the largest boulevard in Sarawak, stretching two kilometres in length and over 20 metres in width. The boulevard will incorporate various recreational facilities with the potential to attract both tourists and local residents.
“We want a conducive lifestyle, not just a quiet residential area after work hours and these projects will brighten up Samarahan and strengthen family ties in the community,” he added.
Also present during the pre-launch ceremony were Deputy Minister of Rural and Regional Development and Kota Samarahan Member of Parliament, Datuk Rubiah Wang, Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Port Development Sarawak Datuk Ir Aidel Lariwoo, Batang Sadong Member of Parliament Rodiyah Sapiee, Simunjan Assemblyman Awla Dris, Samarahan Division Resident Mohamad Irwan Bahari Bujang, IRSDA Special Administrative Officer Anuar Da’an, MPKS chairman Abang Ismawi Abang Ali and MPKS Municipal Secretary Gustian Durani. – DayakDaily
