KUCHING, June 19: Sarawak is looking to incorporate international best practices in sustainable urban planning and renewable energy development into the future growth of Limbang and Lawas, drawing key lessons from its official visit to Vienna, Austria.
Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan said the study visit is part of Sarawak’s ongoing efforts to advance the Post-Covid Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030, which prioritises economic prosperity, social inclusivity, environmental sustainability, innovation and data-driven development.
Speaking at a dinner hosted by the Embassy of Malaysia in Vienna on Thursday (June 18) evening, he expressed appreciation for the Embassy’s hospitality and support throughout the delegation’s programme in Austria.
Awang Tengah said the visit to Aspern Seestadt was particularly significant, as it demonstrated how a modern township can successfully integrate housing, commercial areas, public transport, green spaces and community facilities within a comprehensive urban planning framework.
“Our visit to Aspern Seestadt is highly relevant as it shows how a modern urban development can integrate housing, public transport, commercial activities, green spaces, community facilities and smart urban design within a comprehensive planning framework,” he said in a statement today.
He added that the experience provides valuable reference points for the preparation of the Limbang-Lawas Local Plan, particularly in developing liveable, resilient and well-connected towns that support economic growth while improving the quality of life for local communities.
The delegation also visited the Freudenau Hydropower Plant, where they observed the integration of renewable energy infrastructure with river management, environmental protection and urban development planning.
Awang Tengah said the expected outcome of the visit is to identify suitable planning approaches for the Limbang-Lawas Local Plan, particularly in integrated land use planning, sustainable township development, renewable energy, riverfront development, green infrastructure, public amenities and implementation strategies.
He added that the insights gained from Vienna would help Sarawak shape Limbang and Lawas into competitive, sustainable and liveable border towns, while strengthening long-term energy security, environmental resilience and regional economic development in northern Sarawak. — DayakDaily
