Room for more trade activities, Awang Tengah welcomes India’s companies to invest in digital economy

KUCHING, Sept 20: Investors from India looking for opportunities in Sarawak could explore a broad range of economic activities particularly in the digital economy where India has the expertise. 

Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan raised this point when receiving a courtesy call from the High Commissioner of India to Malaysia His Excellency B. N. Reddy at his office here today. 

“The total trade between Sarawak and India was valued at RM9.933 billion in 2021, consisting of palm oil and petroleum oil exports as well as the imports of aluminum ores, non-ferrous metals, and many more.

“There is indeed room for more trade activities between Sarawak and India,” he iterated in a statement today. 

During the meeting, the leaders exchanged ideas and views on various areas of interests where Sarawak and India can collaborate such as digital and semiconductor, biopharmaceuticals, tourism, construction and commercial agriculture.

Reddy, who is on a four-day visit to Sarawak since Sept 18, was accompanied by High Commission of India in Malaysia First Secretary C Sushma as well as a high-level business delegation including the Consortium of Indian Industries in Malaysia (CIIM) founder chairman Datuk Umang Sharman, among others. 

Advisor to Ministry of International Trade, Industry and Investment (MINTRED) Datuk Mohd Naroden Majais, acting permanent secretary Dzulkornian Masron, and Sarawak Timber Industry Development Corporation general manager Datuk Hashim Bojet were also present. — DayakDaily
