KUCHING, March 23: The Sarawak government has approved RM150 million to upgrade the electricity supply in the Samarahan division, with works scheduled to begin in the second quarter of this year.
According to a news report by the Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas), the project will cover Asajaya, Sadong Jaya, Sebuyau, Simunjan, and Gedong, and will involve the installation of Medium Voltage Covered Conductor (MVCC) technology to replace the existing bare conductor distribution lines.
Sarawak Minister for Utility and Telecommunication, Dato Sri Julaihi Narawi, said the initiative is aimed at improving electricity reliability in the region, including in areas such as Kampung Seruyuk.
“This upgrade will significantly enhance power supply performance. I urge residents to cooperate with Sarawak Energy Berhad (Sarawak Energy) by allowing tree trimming and vegetation clearing works to be carried out regularly,” he said during a Ramadan Welfare Visit and Social Responsibility Programme held yesterday (March 22) in Sebuyau.
Julaihi added that Sarawak Energy had already conducted extensive vegetation clearing along a 68km stretch of the 33kV main overhead line from Asajaya Substation to Sebuyau to address power supply disruptions.
In addition to the RM150 million allocation for Samarahan, the State government has also approved RM425 million to improve electricity infrastructure in Lundu, Betong, Lubok Antu, Sungai Asap, and Lawas.
Both projects will be undertaken by Sarawak Energy and its subsidiary, Syarikat Sesco Berhad (Sesco).
During the same event, Julaihi also presented food aid baskets to 100 asnaf recipients from Kampung Seruyuk, Segali, and Sungai Ladong, as well as financial assistance to 50 students.
Also present was Sebuyau District Officer Ayuradiman Bujang. — DayakDaily
