MIRI, Aug 28: Eight churches in the Telang Usan constituency received RM1.3 million in grants from the Unit for Other Religions (Unifor) to fund the development and upgrading of their houses of worship.
In a Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas) report, Telang Usan assemblyman Dato Dennis Ngau said the allocation was among the largest received by the area to date, reflecting the Sarawak government’s continued commitment to supporting the development of houses of worship.
“The assistance channelled through UNIFOR has enabled many development and upgrading works to be carried out at churches in the Telang Usan area,” he said during the presentation of Unifor grants at the Telang Usan service centre here on Wednesday (Aug 26).
The eight churches were St Walter Chapel Long Pelutan, Sidang Injil Borneo (SIB) Long Keaeh, St Theresa Church Long Sinung @ Long Tap, St Mark Roman Catholic Church in Kampung Long Batan, St Paul Church Long San, St Stefanus Church Long Tebanyi, SIB Long Pilah, and SIB Long Nakan.
Dennis also urged churches receiving Unifor grants for the first time to emulate the management practices of previous recipients, particularly in planning, expenditure, and maintaining financial records.
At the same event, several Village Development and Security Committees (JKKKs), as well as Parent-Teacher Associations (PIBGs), also received assistance under the Minor Rural Project (MRP) allocation.
He said many applications for assistance were still being processed and hoped approved allocations could be channelled to the communities concerned as soon as possible.
