BAU, Aug 28: Water pressure and supply problems in Kampung Barieng, Kampung Segong, Kampung Apar, and Kampung Tabong are expected to be addressed through a RM3 million upgrading project for the booster pump station under the Greater Kuching Coordinated Development Agency (GKCDA).
In a TVS news report, Tasik Biru assemblyman Datuk Henry Harry Jinep said the project, which began last month, involves increasing the capacity of the Kampung Apar suction tank from 50,000 to 100,000 gallons.
He said the increased capacity was important to ensure sufficient water supply and improve water pressure, particularly in increasingly developed residential areas.
“The RM3 million allocation is being used to upgrade the existing suction tank at Kampung Apar. Its original capacity was 50,000 gallons, and we are adding another 50,000 gallons, bringing the total capacity to 100,000 gallons at any one time,” he said when met by the media after inspecting the progress of upgrading works at St Stephen’s Church here today.
Henry said the project also involves the installation of five high-density polyethene (HDPE) tanks and an existing 2,000-gallon tank.
He said the works also include constructing new pipes connecting the Apar Suction Tank to the Barieng Reservoir.
“As the village areas continue to expand and houses are being built on higher ground, water pressure problems have started to emerge because the existing pressure is not strong enough to push water to these areas.
“That is why we need a suction tank and pump system to increase water pressure,” he said.
Meanwhile, he said that the RM1 million upgrading project for St Stephen’s Church, which includes the installation of 14 air-conditioning units, means that congregants can now worship in greater comfort amid increasingly hot weather and growing church attendance.
He said the project also involved repairing roof leaks, repainting the ceiling, upgrading the electrical supply system, and replacing the main switchboard.
“The weather is very hot now, while the number of congregants is also increasing. As a result, comfort has declined. Recognising the importance of congregants’ comfort while worshipping at the church, it was time to upgrade St Stephen’s Church.
“Today, I inspected the church myself and found it to be very comfortable, with the air-conditioning facilities now completed,” he said.
Henry said the upgrading project was funded by the Greater Kuching Coordinated Development Agency (GKCDA).
At the same time, he said the Bau Civic Centre had also been upgraded with lift and escalator facilities to improve accessibility and user comfort.
“We are making improvements so that the facilities are easier for the community to use,” he said.
He said the overall upgrading project for the Bau Civic Centre cost about RM2 million and was expected to be completed by the end of this year.
“The project is expected to be completed by the end of the year, and we hope the Bau Civic Centre, equipped with escalators and lifts, can be used by Chinese New Year next year,” he said. — DayakDaily
