MIRI, Aug 25: Holy Rosary Chapel in Piasau Utara has received RM70,000 from the Sarawak government’s Unit for Other Religions (Unifor) to fund roof upgrading works at the chapel.
Deputy Minister of Tourism and Piasau assemblyman Datuk Sebastian Ting Chiew Yew said the allocation would benefit the wider local community, as the chapel serves not only as a place of worship but also as a multipurpose hall.
He said the chapel was particularly significant because it is located within a multi-faith community where Christians, Muslims and people of other faiths have lived together harmoniously for many years.
“The spirit of cooperation among people of different faiths has made Holy Rosary Chapel more than just a place of worship. It also serves as a multipurpose hall for the Kampung Piasau Utara community,” he said after the Unifor cheque presentation ceremony to the chapel here on Monday (Aug 24).
In a Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas) news, Ting said the chapel’s history also reflected the strong involvement of people from different religious backgrounds in raising funds and supporting the development of its facilities.
He stressed that such bonds should continue to be nurtured, describing racial and religious harmony as one of Sarawak’s key strengths.
He said the spirit of mutual respect and cooperation should also be instilled in younger generations to ensure Sarawak’s religious and cultural diversity remains a cornerstone of community life.
Meanwhile, Miri Mayor and Pujut assemblyman Adam Yii Siew Sang said the UNIFOR allocation demonstrated the Sarawak government’s continued commitment to supporting non-Muslim places of worship and community facilities.
He said proper and well-maintained places of worship were important in ensuring that religious and community activities could be conducted safely and comfortably. — DayakDaily
