KUCHING, July 24: Special assistant to Democratic Action Party (DAP) Sarawak chief Chong Chieng Jen, Michael Kong, holds that Parti Sarawak Bersatu (PSB) lawmakers should resign if its president Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh wishes to uphold moral standards.
He said Wong should be reminded that during the 12th Sarawak Election, his party was elected based on their manifesto and promise to fight GPS.
“Hence, PSB’s decision to join GPS (Gabungan Parti Sarawak) raises moral concerns, given the people’s clear desire for opposition against GPS.
“If Wong Soon Koh genuinely wishes to uphold moral standards, I urge him and all PSB ADUNs (State lawmakers) to resign and allow the people to decide the mandate once again,” said Kong in a statement.
He said PSB showed its true colour of being an opportunistic party when it announced its support to Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS).
To Kong, the present federal government stands stable because all coalitions have committed to supporting Anwar Ibrahim.
“In Sarawak, there are no indications of any parties actively attempting to destabilise the government. Therefore, the only explanation for the support towards GPS is that PSB has once again shown its true colours of being an opportunistic party,” said Kong
To him, it was essential to set the record straight and address the inaccuracies in Wong’s statement and that the people’s voice must be respected, and any attempts to manipulate the narrative or justify opportunistic political moves should not go unchallenged.
Turning to DAP’s position in Sarawak, he said it is essential to recognise that GPS bears the responsibility for placing DAP in a peculiar opposition position in the State.
He said while BN (Barisan Nasional)-led governments in Malacca and Johor and the GRS (Gabungan Rakyat Sabah)-led government in Sabah have welcomed Pakatan Harapan lawmakers as part of the government backbencher, GPS has consistently opposed DAP in Sarawak. Despite both parties being part of the same Federal government, GPS has persistently marginalised DAP Sarawak.
“It is crucial to highlight that DAP Sarawak operates autonomously, making its decisions independently. Our DAP State Committee makes choices for DAP Sarawak, and although Anthony Loke serves as our Secretary-General, Wong Soon Koh’s attempt to link DAP Sarawak’s actions with the federal leadership’s decisions displays his blatant ignorance and desire to defend the indefensible,” said Kong.
Kong said this in response to Wong’s recent statement that it was morally wrong for DAP to continue playing the opposition role in Sarawak when DAP Central has to rely on GPS kingmakers’ role for the survival of the federal unity government. — DayakDaily
