KUCHING, Sept 1: Sarawak must not be content with its political independence and should put emphasis on eradicating poverty and illiteracy among the people, opined political analyst Dato Peter Minos.

“For Sarawak, working very vigorously on helping the people, especially in education, basic utilities, and facilities, including in the new industries, is the way forward.

“All these exercises create opportunities and help reduce poverty. At the current rate of how things are going on and the seriousness putting in, I think by 2030, a substantial level of poverty in Sarawak will be eliminated,” he said in a press statement today.

Meanwhile, on the Merdeka Day celebration, Minos said that Merdeka means freedom, and in Malaysia’s case, it means freedom, subjugation, submission, and subservience from colonialism.

“Malaya became independent in 1957, and, for Sarawak and Sabah, it was 1963. But we all agreed to celebrate 1957 as our year of independence as a nation. No issue there,” he added. — DayakDaily
