KUCHING, April 7: Sarawak’s path to sustainable development must be in line with Islamic values, says Premier of Sarawak Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

“Yes, we are planning Sarawak’s development according to our own ‘acuan’ (mold), but at the same time, our emphasis on sustainable development must be in line with Islamic values.

“History has proven that people of the past could progress almost in every way because they adhered to the dynamic teachings of Quran which helped to improve the society,” he said.

Abang Johari said 2023 marks the third year of implementation of the Post Covid-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030 as well as the year to carry out the mid-term review of the 12th Malaysia Plan (12MP).

He said the mid-term review is for the government to evaluate performances and ensure all development plans are on the right track towards achieving the set target.

“In this review, it is important for us to prioritise high-impact projects that are labeled as urgent in PCDS 2030, which will accelerate the growth of Sarawak towards becoming a developed region.

“Therefore, we must focus our efforts on priority projects based on three main pillars namely economic prosperity, social engagement and environmental sustainability,” he added.

Meanwhile, Abang Johari also said there will be a celebration this year together with Sabah and Peninsular Malaysia to commemorate Sarawak’s 60th independence anniversary.

“Sarawak will hold various programmes including religious activities to celebrate its 60th anniversary in the Federation of Malaysia,” he said during the Sarawak-level al-quran recitation event held at the Darul Ma’mur Mosque in Lawas tonight.
